Each year, FITUR in Madrid marks the beginning of global tourism-related exhibitions and fairs. This year, too, despite the uncertainty over Omicron and in spite of various travel restrictions in place, Fitur began on January 19 and concluded on Tuesday. For the organisers, IFEMA Madrid, this was a special tourism recovery edition and it witnessed a strong result by the number of attendees. This edition had been critical for recovering levels of business and turnover, had made Madrid the hub for the global international tourism community and has enabled FITUR to convey a message of confidence and strength to the whole world.

The figures for the event exceeded all the initial expectations by the organisers. The participation rose over its first three days rose to 81,193 attendees from 127 countries, doubling the figures for the 2021 edition, in addition to the general public. Approximately, 30,000 people attended the event on the last day of the event, the public day. It took the total number to 111,193 attendees. Online professional engagement at FITUR from around the world also witnessed record figures. The event also generated EUR 150 million for Spain helping its economy. The event was also attended by United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) representatives, tourism ministers from 21 countries and four delegations.

The FITUR LIVEConnect platform complements the fair and provided a hybrid format over a more extended season and broader geographic scope. The event also had 33,286 registrations, 10 pc above the initial forecasts. The traffic on FITUR’s website was also up by 90 pc, reaching 150,000 unique users, twice the number of users in 2021. The response from the companies, countries and destinations was good with the numbers reaching record figures.

From 107 countries about 6,993 participants participated in the event. There were 600 exhibitors and official representation by seventy countries, led by the Dominican Republic, which had deployed resources and organised a multitude of activities as FITUR Partner Country.

All these arrivals at FITUR also generated an economic impact for Madrid of approximately EUR 150 million, announced the Madrid Regional Government’s President, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, on the occasion of FITUR’s Madrid Day. Spain’s Prime Minister also used FITUR as a platform to announce the second edition of the Spanish Government’s Sustainability Plan.

FITUR 2022 also managed to get extensive international media coverage of the fair, with many accredited journalists from over 40 countries. The event also made a good social media presence with more than six million impressions and 90,000 interactions with the fair’s profile, say the organisers.
